Pine Point Rapids
Whiteshell Provincial Park
June 14, 2020 Pine Point Rapids is a great day hike that heads past three gorgeous water features. It’s commonly rated as moderate and has harder and easier options to customize your experience. It’s built like two loops side by side. The first loop is 5.1 kms and ends at Pine Point Rapids (The northern section of this loop is much easier, wider, and more aggressively groomed). The second loop is 2.8 kms and travels past Acorn Falls and Viburnum Falls.
Length: 8.2 kms (5.1 km with option to add 2.8 km with additional loop)
Duration: 2.75 hours. Would suggest 3-3.5 hours.
Facilities: Non-flush toilets at trail head. Non-flush toilets, picnic tables, fire pits and a small day-use building are available for use at the rapids.
Trail head Location: Northeast of Winnipeg roughly an hour and 45 minute drive along Highway 307 in Whiteshell Provincial Park. If you’re approaching from the north/west, you’re nearly there once you pass Nutimik Lake.
Signage: The trail is well marked with white wooden poles with orange plastic wrapped around the top. When crossing over flat rocky sections, the poles can get pretty far apart. If you feel unsure of the right direction, stand near the last pole and scan 360 degrees. You should be able to spot the next one.
Trail condition: The trail started off very well groomed, flat and wide but breaks off less than a km in. The southern 2.7 km section of the loop is narrow and wet/muddy at sections, while the 2.4 km northern section was very wide and groomed. The 2.8 km loop that can be added after Pine Point Rapids was narrow with sections of significant elevation.
Things to note: Very little cell reception, don’t rely on your phone.
Questions?: I’d love to chat about the hike if you have any questions. Visit the About page to find out how.

Close up of the trail map. You can see the two loops sitting side by side.

This is the sign you approach when the first loop splits. The southern section is narrower and more rustic, the northern is more like the flat beginning section.

On the southern option there were a number of wet spots.

A boardwalk keeps you up off the mud for a portion of the trail.

Most of the signs are a white wooden post with an orange piece of plastic wrapped around the top.

Another sign seen along the trail were simply arrows fastened to trees.

This is the beginning of the trail. For the first nearly 1 km it looks like this: wide, groomed, and flat.
