Hunt Lake Trail
Whiteshell Provincial Park
May 20,2020 Hunt Lake Trail is a gorgeous day hike commonly rated as ‘hard’. The trail follows the water’s edge offering incredible views of West Hawk Lake from varying levels of elevation.
Length: 12.7 km (6.3 km in and out trail)
Duration: 3-6 hours (dependent on fitness and conditions)
Facilities: None - closest would be the Nite Hawk Cafe or West Hawk Campground
Trail head Location: Straight shot east from Winnipeg along the Number 1 Highway, very close to Ontario border. Take Highway 44 north until it dead ends then turn east and it’ll dead end at the trail head.
Signage: Occasional blue signs on trees, orange spray painted rocks. (examples of both below)
Trail condition: Rocky with a lot of up and down. There are times when you’re following a well groomed and obvious trail and others when you have to scan ahead of you to spot the next trail marker.
Questions?: I’d love to chat about the hike if you have any questions. Visit the About page to find out how.

This is the entrance to the trail. To get there, you have to get to the trail head and cross the hill on the other side then hook up with a gravel road heading east. You'll find this entrance there.

View across West Hawk Lake near the beginning of the trail.

We didn't see a lot of wildlife along the way, but we did see a Garter Snake on the path.

I had to do a bit of climbing and there's a perfect little cubby to climb up to here.

This is part of the trail where you walk between a rock cliff face on the right and the lake on the left.

One of the more challenging spots along the hike where you just have to use the rocks to descent, and ascend on the way back.

The view at the end of the hike is gorgeous. There's a small shelter and fire pit as well.

Some points along this trail reminded me of BC, and I wasn't complaining.

Lots of gorgeous green popping out at this time of year.

Just a nice view.

A gorgeous cove along the trail. Snapped this picture on the way back to the parking lot.
